September Desktop Wallpaper / Stand by Me

My good friend Dave and I headed out to the Crowsnest Pass area about a month ago and I just finally got a chance to review the images.  Dave is a great night photographer and often has great ideas for me.  For instance, I left my cable release at home.  A good cable release / intervalometer is a must when you do long exposure photos.  Without a cable release it’s almost impossible to get a steady long exposure (longer than 30 seconds).

So when I let Dave know I left this valuable piece of equipment in my car (we carpooled to the location) he had a brilliant solution.  He told me to cover my lens with his hat (this way no light would get into the camera), set my camera to bulb mode and use a rock taped down to the shutter.  Normally on bulb mode and without a cable release you would have to keep your finger on the shutter button, quite a difficult task for an 11 minute exposure.  Once it’s all set and the camera is exposing you can just take the hat off the lens.

After the 11 minute exposure I put the hat back on the lens and peeled back the tape to remove the rock.  This is what I got…

  1. Lookin solid! I still haven’t processed anything from that night. Really should get around to it…

  2. Thanks man… wouldn’t have gotten it without your suggestion and location scouting. Let me know when you’ve processed yours. I did quite a bit at post. I turned it into a silhouette shot.
