As I write this blog post I’ve been up for almost 24 hours. The life of a photographer isn’t easy. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. When I sit at my edition station tagging and sorting photos till 3am I sometimes can’t help but look back at some of my older work. My passion of being a photographer started at an early age but it was really just four years ago when the real journey began.
Four years ago to the day I created this image driving home from Globalfest 2007. Globalfest is an international fireworks competition held every year in Calgary. That night I had met Vincent T. Joachim a photographer and cousin of one of my best friends. He took me under his wing that night and showed me things that would have taken me years to learn. He showed me how a photograph is not just about technical specifications. It’s about art, emotion and vision. Most of all he showed me friendship and collaboration. Ever since that first meeting four years ago we have been very close friends.
Without Vince showing me the ropes that night I would never have been able to create this image as I was driving home. After I captured this image I submitted it to a worldwide amateur photo competition and it received an honorable mention. From there I was well on my way. I tasted victory and satisfaction and it was amazing.
Here are some pictures from the fireworks this year. All were taken with my Nikon D300s tethered and processed on my iPad. I hope you enjoy and I hope you stick around for the next four years as I promise you it will be worth it!
