FESTIVAL NATION is a long-term project that explores the emerging culture and movement of transformative gatherings, through multiple themes. This first series explores the theme of Celebration. The celebration atmosphere, created with the music, costumes, and visuals first attracts many to these transformative gatherings. For thousands of years humans have lived in small communities or tribes, able to sustain the personal interaction we so desire. In recent times, the rise of urban growth has separated us from that desire. In a time where social networks have taken over the simple act of personal interaction we are coming to a crossroads. The emergence of transformative gatherings (or festivals) is filling this need. It sparks the desire of personal interaction once again. In 2013, Jeff Cruz was invited to photograph two transformative gatherings, Shambhala, in British Columbia and Astral Harvest, in Northern Alberta. Already familiar with the environment and sub-culture of these gatherings he is able to give an insider’s perspective of the culture and environment at these places and at these moments in our time. Images are separated into night and day. During the light of day, we see the preparation, the build-up of excitement. At night, we see the artificial re-creation of lights, colour, and an extension of one’s act of celebration. We see a festival nation.
