Burning Man 2015 / A First Timer’s Perspective on the Best Place on Earth
A few weeks ago I spent some time at Black Rock City, Nevada. To those who aren’t familiar with Black Rock City, it is a temporary city of approximately 70,000 people. You may of heard of it as: Burning Man. Here are a few highlights and my perspective as a first time Burner. Or, if you’d rather see all the photos click here. As a gift to my fellow Burners I provided my talents as a photographer, sacrificed my precious camera gear to the dust and gifted photos for a free download (download password: gift). To me, this place truly was the best place on earth. To quote a wise man (and one of my best friends), as we cruised along the moonlight desert, “there is no other more interesting place on this planet right now.” For me, that says it all.
I passed these buttons out so people could download their photos. A big thanks to Mercedes at Insomniac Designs for doing a great job getting these out to me in time for Burning Man.
With many people arriving the first day it was quite the wait to get in (7-8 hours).
Fine dust like sand is everywhere. If you’re new you get initiated by rolling in the sand.
At the centre of the city is a tall wooden effigy that is burned on the second last night.
This was one of many art installations that illuminated the night.
Many camps became dance clubs that allowed you to dance till well after the sun came up.
There were many fire performers out every night giving fire shows.
Art cars were often mobile discos for people to follow and party around with.
Black Rock City Rangers making Burning Man safe.
White out conditions were prevalent throughout the week.
Every so often the man would be visible from afar.
Huge typewriter art installation on the Playa.
The Temple of Promise stands out even from far away.
The entrance to the Temple of promise.
As you walk inside the Temple of Promise the structure gets smaller and smaller using a golden ratio fibonacci style shape.
People leave behind memories of loved ones or messages they want to leave behind.
As you exit the Temple you are surrounded by the structure you were once inside. Three trees are at the centre. Perhaps it is symbolic of letting go of the past and letting new memories enter our lives?
Sometimes it’s just good to have a seat and relax (while your friend is relieving himself at the porta-potties.
Centre camp is a place to escape the mid-day sun and to socialize with fellow Burners
Centre camp is situated under the largest free standing canopy structure in the world.
Bikes are the major mode of transportation. It is a must-have to get around.
Sometimes art just appears out of nowhere on the Playa.
Costumes and crazy antics are the norm here. All in the name of self expression.
Following a rodent onto a rolling boat. What could go wrong?
I’m on a boat!
OK, so we partied on a boat all night and the sun is rising…. amazing.
Campers at Camp Suburbia enjoying the sunrise.
Burner enjoying the sunrise.
The sun rising over the Playa is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen.
Packed art car. Guess what? Free coffee (with a hint of dust).
On Thursday camp ReNarnia hosted a party. ReBar = Open bar.
Crazy Canucks playing hockey in the desert. I would’ve joined them had I brought my gear :)
Groups of all kinds come to the Burn.
You meet people from all walks of life. These ladies were from New Zealand I believe.
Free hugs.
Trampoline fun!
Praying for some water?
At the science camp they were melting things (sorry I forgot what this was called).
The metal crystalized once it cooled down.
He forgot to close the blinds.
Odd bikes of all kinds.
Our neighbours had a bike course.
Star Trek shuttle!
Major Lazer / Diplo with Skrillex.

Stage dancers.
Some interesting moves.
Beats Antique.
Hula hooper.
Hippie Trap – this “trap” was mimicking a fly zapper but had booze and cigarettes inside. Ha!
I did some photos for Mobility Camp. They were kind enough to let me charge my medical device. Go say hi to the Rat Lady , located at Centre Camp. They do an amazing job to help keep Burning Man inclusive to all, even those with limited mobility.
Strangely enough, this is centre camp, sorta.
We decided to hang out in the Media Tent for awhile to wait out the storm. In came 20-30 people.
Because of the storm they decided to have their wedding ceremony inside the Media Tent.
You could say a wedding crashed us!
The happy couple’s first kiss. Magical things happen at Burning Man.
After searching far and wide we finally found the infamous Robot Heart sound camp!
Robot Heart had some amazing sounds.
Pac Man
One of the best sounding stages on the Playa.
Another interesting bike at centre camp.
Polaroids at Burning Man?

My beautiful camp-mate Amy sporting her custom headpiece.
Vanessa and Cam. My amazing camp-mates and their beautiful attire for the night of burn.
Sarah and Andrea. These lovely ladies are showing off what they’ll be wearing.
Fireworks light up the sky as the man is about to be burned.
And so it ends, and so it begins. I hope to see you all on the Playa next year!
