Second Skin & Other Anecdotes / Exhibition at Inglewood Fine Arts

It’s been quite awhile since my last post.  A lot of life events have happened in 2017.  The most notable, I’m now a father!!  More about that later as I get back into a regular schedule of posting the latest photography news.  Now about my latest work…

Family Ties

Second Skin & Other Anecdotes

In the 1970’s my mother and father individually immigrated to Canada from the Philippines in search for a better life.  They met, got married, and had two boys who they raised with one foot in Canadian culture and the other foot in Filipino culture.

Second Skin and Other Anecdotes was produced using found slides from my childhood, which were originally created by my father.  Selected slides were then projected onto objects and documented.  The projections represent the characters of the story, while the objects were chosen as a cultural metaphor.  Slides are intentionally out of focus to depict the diluting of culture.  Beside each photograph is accompanying text which chronicles the story.  In each of the ‘anecdotes’ that make up the work, Asian upbringing blend with Canadian identities to highlight challenges faced when creating a bi-cultural existence.
