When I first thought up this crazy project it took me a few days to decide if I really wanted to do it. It would involve me going to the Stampede almost every day for ten days. Each of those days, instead of trying to win prizes on the midway, instead of going on thrilling rides, instead of pigging out on carnival food I would have to focus all my attention on finding an interesting face out of a sea of people.
There is no try…
I decided that a bit of work and determination was worth it. At the very least I would try it out the first day and see what happens.
Day Number One
The first day was more of a test run to see if I could achieve my daily goal of 15 faces. I decided that if I reach about 15 faces every day I go out to the Stampede I would have a nice buffer in case I missed a day or two.
Starting out a photo project is like preparing for a race or a competition. You need to stretch, limber up and focus. Sometimes you need to warm-up, like a pitcher in a bullpen. The first trial was crucial and this was my warm-up. The moment I saw my first face I knew I would succeed. An old school friend, Josh Garcia walked by me and he was my first face. I had photographed him a few times before and he helped me get my rhythm, my mojo, my confidence.
